The Sweet Spirit of Costa Rica

Dulces Ticos – a fitting name for a coffee that captures the generous sweetness and colourful character of Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Produced by Diego Guardia in Grecia, Alajuela, this natural Obatá brings together ripe fruit, soft caramel and a luxurious white chocolate finish in a cup that feels both playful and beautifully composed.

The coffee comes from the volcanic landscape surrounding Hacienda Sonora, a family estate located near the foot of the Poás Volcano. Coffee has shaped the Guardia family’s relationship with this land for generations, growing among native vegetation in fertile volcanic soil and beneath the shelter of established shade trees.

Hacienda Sonora has remained in the family for more than a century. When Alberto Guardia took responsibility for the estate in the 1970s, he gradually placed coffee at the centre of the farm. In 1999, during a period of historically low coffee prices, he invested in an on-site mill that gave the family greater control over quality and allowed individual varieties and harvest lots to be processed separately.

Obata Cherries

Obatá: Resilience with Remarkable Character

Obatá is a compact, high-yielding Arabica variety developed in Brazil from Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi parentage. It was selected for its resistance to coffee leaf rust and introduced commercially to Costa Rica by ICAFE in 2014.

While its resilience makes Obatá valuable in the field, its cup quality is what makes this lot especially exciting. Grown at 1,600 metres above sea level and processed as a natural, the variety develops a rounded sweetness, generous texture and vivid fruit character.

In Dulces Ticos, that character begins with the impression of ripe strawberry before settling into smooth caramel. A creamy, confectionery sweetness carries through the finish, recalling white chocolate and giving the coffee its distinctly indulgent personality.
